Raksha Bandhan Celebration

Raksha Bandhan Celebration

19 August 2024: The Raksha Bandhan festival, celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm at Deccan Education Society's New English Medium School, provided an opportunity for students to express their gratitude and appreciation not only for their family members but also for the essential individuals who play vital roles in their daily lives.

Raksha Bandhan, traditionally a celebration of the sibling bond, was embraced in a broader sense, emphasizing the spirit of protection, care, and respect for everyone who contributes to the school’s well-being.

The students took part in the meaningful tradition of tying rakhis (sacred threads) to various school helpers who work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth functioning of the school. These include rickshaw drivers, van drivers, watchmen, and other support staff, whose daily efforts are often taken for granted. By tying rakhis to these individuals, the students acknowledged the important role they play in their lives, ensuring their safety, transportation, and overall comfort.

This act of tying rakhis wasn’t just about the traditional bond of protection between siblings; it was an extension of that idea, recognizing those who protect and serve in various capacities, day in and day out. The students, with warmth and enthusiasm, tied the rakhis to these school helpers, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and affection. It was a heartwarming gesture that reflected a sense of community and shared gratitude, reminding everyone of the importance of acknowledging each other’s contributions.

The celebration also extended beyond the school premises. In a beautiful show of appreciation for the local police force, the students tied rakhis to Police Constable Rupali Bhong from the Shivaji Nagar Police Station. This was an incredibly thoughtful and symbolic gesture, as it expressed gratitude towards the police for their role in ensuring safety and maintaining law and order in the community. Constable Rupali Bhong, who is a dedicated and hardworking member of the police force, was honored with the tying of the rakhi, as the students recognized her and the police force’s efforts in safeguarding the public.

By including the police in the Raksha Bandhan celebrations, the students not only celebrated the bond of siblinghood but also extended the spirit of protection and care to the larger community. It was a reminder that protection comes in many forms—whether it’s the protection of physical safety by police officers, the protection of transportation and safety by rickshaw and van drivers, or the protection of the school environment by the watchmen and support staff.

This inclusive celebration of Raksha Bandhan helped foster a sense of gratitude, respect, and unity among the students and the broader community, reinforcing the values of appreciation and care. The students learned that Raksha Bandhan is not just about the bond between brothers and sisters, but also about recognizing the everyday heroes who make our lives easier, safer, and more comfortable.

The event at the school was not just a traditional festival celebration, but also a meaningful way of teaching the children about respect, gratitude, and the importance of expressing appreciation for those who often work quietly behind the scenes. It was a day filled with smiles, gratitude, and the beautiful spirit of Raksha Bandhan, as everyone—from the students to the school helpers and the police officers—felt valued and recognized.
